Late Astrophysicist Stephen Hawking’s Nurse Struck Off For Care Failings

The nurse who cared for late British astrophysicist Stephen Hawking was on Tuesday banned for failing “to provide the standards of good, professional care that we expect and Professor Hawking deserved”. Britain’s Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) made the ruling at a hearing where Patricia Dowdy, 61, faces multiple misconduct charges over her care of the professor – who died last year – including financial misconduct, not providing appropriate care and not having the correct qualifications. Hawking was confined to a wheelchair, almost completely paralysed and unable to speak except through his trademark voice synthesiser after having being diagnosed with motor neurone disease aged 21. “As the public rightly expects, in serious cases such as this – where a nurse has failed in their duty of care and has not been able to (provide) evidence to the panel that they have learned from their mistakes and be fit to practise – we will take action,” said the NMC’s Matthew McClelland. “As t

Britain, Germany, France join wave of Boeing suspensions in wake of Ethiopian Airlines crash

A Boeing 737 MAX 8 sits parked at Boeing Co.'s Renton Assembly Plant on March 11, 2019, in Renton, Wash. Britain on Tuesday joined a growing number of nations to suspend flights by Boeing 737 MAX aircraft over their territory, after an Ethiopia Airlines plane of that model crashed on Sunday killing 157 people. “The U.K. Civil Aviation Authority has been closely monitoring the situation, however, as we do not currently have sufficient information from the flight data recorder we have, as a precautionary measure, issued instructions to stop any commercial passenger flights from any operator arriving, departing or overflying U.K. airspace,” a spokesperson said in a statement about Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. “The U.K. Civil Aviation Authority’s safety directive will be in place until further notice.”

US Still Won’t Ground Boeing Max 737, Despite Pressure From Senators

The Brits, on Tuesday, were the eighth country to ground the Boeing Max 737 — a model that crashed in Ethiopia on Sunday — but because the United States loves setting itself apart from the rest of the world the nation has yet to ground the aircraft with officials saying that they even refuse to do so, though there has been pressure applied by US lawmakers. The US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) has said it will not suspend Boeing 737 Max aircraft despite mounting pressure from senators and workers’ unions. The FAA said a review showed “no systemic performance issues” and there is no basis for grounding the aircraft. The Cerebellum Is Your "Little Brain"—and It Does Some Pretty Big Things

A newly identified circuit connecting the cerebellum to the brain’s reward centers in mice could help scientists understand autism and addiction Credit: Getty Images For the longest time the cerebellum, a dense, fist-size formation located at the base of the brain, never got much respect from neuroscientists. For about two centuries the scientific community believed the cerebellum (Latin for “little brain”), which contains approximately half of the brain’s neurons, was dedicated solely to the control of movement. In recent decades, however, the tide has started to turn, as researchers have revealed details of the structure’s role in cognition, emotional processing and social behavior. The longstanding interest in the cerebellum can be seen in the work of French physiologist Marie Jean Pierre Flourens—(1794–1867). Flourens removed the cerebella of pigeons and found the birds became unbalanced, although they could still move. Based on these observations, he concluded the cerebellum

Yasmin Hurd, a neurobiologist who studies addiction, in her office at the Addiction Institute at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. N EW YORK — When she started collecting brains, neuroscientist Yasmin Hurd’s peers wondered what she could possibly be thinking. Studying animals made way more sense as a way to trace how chronic drug use changes the brain, they thought — after all, how was Hurd going to parse the long-term effects from the trauma of the overdoses that killed the brain donors? She waved her colleagues off. She wanted to know what was happening in human brains, not in mice. So she began filling up freezers with slices of brain tissue from hundreds of overdose victims, most of them killed by too much cocaine. “We had a lot of freezers, sadly,” said Hurd, who now runs the Addiction Institute at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. And then, early in the 2000s, she noticed a tidal shift: Suddenly, the overdoses were dominated by heroin. She saw the  opioid

China offers help to Venezuela to restore power

People throng the streets to protest against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's government in Caracas, Venezuela, March 12, 2019. China offered on Wednesday to help Venezuela restore its power grid, after President Nicolas Maduro accused U.S. counterpart Donald Trump of cyber “sabotage” that plunged the South American country into its worst blackout on record. Maduro, who retains control of the military and other state institutions as well as the backing of Russia and China, has blamed Washington for his nation’s economic turmoil and denounced opposition leader Juan Guaido as a puppet of the United States. With the power blackout in its sixth day, hospitals struggled to keep equipment running, food rotted in the tropical heat and exports from the country’s main oil terminal were shut down. Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lu Kang said China had noted reports that the power grid had gone down due to a hacking attack. “China is deeply concerned about

Trump administration ‘very seriously’ considering plan to designate some Mexicans as terrorists

President Donald Trump has finally found a way to designate Mexicans as terrorists to justify his hardline immigration policies. The president  told Breitbart  News that his administration was “very seriously” considering a policy change that would label Mexican drug cartels or some of their factions as Foreign Terrorist Organizations. “We are, we are,” Trump told the website. “We’re thinking about doing it very seriously. In fact, we’ve been thinking about it for a long time.” The president appeared to admit the change was intended to gin up fear of Mexican immigrants to justify his proposed border wall and other controversial anti-immigration policies. “It’s psychological, but it’s also economic,” Trump said. “As terrorists — as terrorist organizations, the answer is yes. They are.” Trump then cited an inflated statistic to justify his fear-mongering about gang violence across the border. “Mexico, unfortunately, has lost control of the cartels,” Trump said. “They’ve totally l

US Official: Iranian Regime Wants Iraq to Become a Province of Iran

WASHINGTON —  U.S. Special Representative for Iran, Brian Hook, blasted Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's visit to Iraq and accused his government of trying to control Iraq by fueling sectarian conflict in the country. U.S. Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook speaks to VOA Persian, Dec. 18, 2018. In an interview with Alhurrha TV, Hook said Rouhani's visit is not in the best interest of the Iraqi people, adding that Iran does not support the security and sovereignty of Iraq. "When President Rouhani comes into Iraq, you have to question the motive," Hook said Monday. "I think what Iran would ultimately like to see happen is Iraq turn into a province of Iran so that they can create a military highway across the northern Middle East that the Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps can use to ferry missiles and weapons." Hook said Iran is "the last revolutionary regime on earth," and it is trying to further destabilize the Middle East by reinforci
