Children trapped as school collapses in Nigeria

The building collapsed at around 10am local time and it is thought some 100 pupils were inside.

A three storey building which housed a school has collapsed trapping children inside.

Children are trapped after a three storey building containing a school collapsed in Lagos, Nigeria.

Emergency services are on the scene and rescuers are attempting to pull survivors out of the rubble.

Locals report the school, which was on the top floor, had around 100 pupils and that eight children had been pulled alive from the debris.

Ibrahim Farinloye, spokesman for the national emergency management agency's southwest region, said there was no immediate information on any casualties.

"It is believed that many people including children are currently trapped in the building," he said.

He added: "The third floor of the building is housing a private school in the area."

The building collapsed at around 10am local time, he said.

Video from the scene shows the huge crowd cheer as a dust-covered child is taken out of the debris and put in an ambulance.

Hundreds of people have gathered and many are directly trying to help the rescue efforts.

Nigeria, which has poor building regulation oversight, has suffered a number of building collapses.

"The perceived quality of the infrastructure is low," the International Monetary Fund has remarked.

In 2016, more than 100 people were killed when a church collapsed in southeastern Nigeria, while in Lagos that same year, a five-storey building still under construction collapsed causing the deaths of at least 30 people.

Around 20 million people live in Lagos, the country's commercial capital.
