Sir Alex Ferguson 'forgives' Jurgen Klopp for waking him up at 3.30am to tell him Liverpool had won Premier League
SIR ALEX FERGUSON says he forgives Jurgen Klopp for waking him up at 3.30am to tell him Liverpool had won the Premier League.
Manchester United legend Fergie, 78, paid a glowing tribute to Klopp after the Anfield boss won the Sir Alex Ferguson Trophy for the LMA Manager of the Year.
It was back when Ferguson took over at Old Trafford that he vowed to knock Liverpool "off their f***ing perch".
Well, 30 years later, Klopp's heroes got back on top, sealing the title by 18 points.
And it turns out the German was so desperate to let Fergie know about his achievement that he woke him up with a phone call.
Presenting the award tonight, Fergie said: "Jurgen, fantastic. I speak about Leeds United, 16 years in Championship.
"Liverpool, 30 years since winning that league. Incredible.
"You really thoroughly deserve it. The performance level of the team was outstanding.
"Your personality went right through the whole club. A marvellous performance.
"I'll forgive you for waking me up at half past 3 in the morning to tell you'd won the league! Thank you…
"But anyway, you've thoroughly deserved it. Well done."
Klopp in his reply recalled having breakfast with Fergie, where he said it was like "meeting the Pope".
The Liverpool gaffer said: "I'm absolutely delighted to get this wonderful trophy.
"Ferguson was the first British manager I met. We had breakfast a long time ago, I'm not sure he remembers it but I remember it.
"It was like meeting the Pope.
"It was great and from the first second we really clicked.
"I wouldn't have thought in that moment that one day I would hold the trophy in my hands which is named after him."
