Ifeanyi George: Enugu Rangers, teammates pay tribute to Nigeria forward after another fatal road crash

Tributes have been paid to Enugu Rangers and Nigeria striker Ifeanyi George, who was killed in a road traffic accident on Sunday morning along with two other players.
George, 26, was driving to Lagos from Enugu when his vehicle collided into a stationary truck. The player was returning home after being granted leave by Rangers due to the NPFL suspension amid the coronavirus pandemic.
"It's a big shock to me," Rangers defender Ifeanyi Nweke told ESPN. "This was all caused by coronavirus. He was travelling back to his city after we were all given 10 days' break, due to the outbreak, and was with two other players in their own car, in a convoy. They were OK."
George had represented Nigeria's home-based Eagles team on two occasions, playing for Salisu Yusuf's team in both legs of their double-header African Nations Championship qualifier against Benin in August 2017.
"He was a friendly guy and a good player," Nweke added. "He'd been with First Bank Football Club, Enymba, and now was at Rangers."
Ex-Barcelona B winger Ezekiel Bassey overlapped with George at Enyimba, before the latter moved onto Rangers.
"He was a very cool guy, and an easy-going dude," Bassey told ESPN. "It's so sad to have lost him in this way. It's so sad, and so painful."
FC Tulsa midfielder Raphael Ayagwa, who played alongside George for Nigeria, also paid his respects to his former teammate.
"He was a really nice guy, funny and easy-going," Ayagwa told ESPN. "I still can't believe it. "It's so sad, and such a big loss, just another case study for Nigeria's bad roads."
A statement issued by Rangers attempted to clarify the circumstances around the accident.
"The vehicle smashed into a parked articulated vehicle along Onitsha-Agbor-Benin road, Sunday morning," Rangers General Manager Davidson Owumi said.
"We just heard this disturbing news this morning and what we hear is not palatable.
"I await information from my officials that are already on their way to the spot where the accident was said to have taken place. We call for prayers in this hour of pains."
The news comes only two weeks after eight players of Guinean side Etoile de Guinee were killed when their team bus crashed on its way to a league game.
Nigerian football itself is still reeling from Thursday's armed attack on the Enyimba bus as the team returned to Aba following their NPFL victory over Adamawa United in Gombe, which left forward Cyril Olisema with superficial injuries.
Rangers, who have won seven Nigerian titles, are fourth in the NPFL table on 37 points.

Coronavirus: 'The worst bit is the uncontrollable coughing'

"The worst bit is the uncontrollable coughing," says Andrew O'Dwyer, who is recovering after being infected with the new coronavirus following a skiing trip to Italy in late February. "I've had worse flu, without a doubt - but I wouldn't want to catch it again," he says during his self-isolation at home in south-west London. Despite having type 1 diabetes, Andrew says having the virus "isn't anything to worry about for me personally". He adds that the fever he experienced is "no different to normal flu-type symptoms". "I've not been concerned," he says. The severity of symptoms can vary widely among people. Those who are older and have pre-existing medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease) are more likely to become severely ill and can need hospital treatment. There have been 10 coronavirus-related deaths so far in the UK. Andrew was told the virus wasn't circulating in the resort ...

Babajide made a Stunning Revelation about the Forthcoming Governorship Election in Edo State

Babajide a veteran journalist, while speaking on the popular program “Journalist Hangout” on TVC news Friday August 7, made a stunning revelation about the forthcoming governorship election in Edo state, says all political parties should shown violence because election is not a do or die affair. Babajide while reacting said “ I have to say I have my fears about these forthcoming election, and I hope my fears does not come past. As we can see the shenanigans in Edo state it is now visible that it is no more Oshiomole against Obaseki, it is now PDP against APC which could be devastating in the light of the politics going on now. Obaseki himself divided the APC, because all the lawmakers in Edo state belong to the APC but he divided them by inaugurating some lawmakers, and refusing to inaugurate others. Right now as it stands 17 lawmakers have decided to align with the APC and just 7 lawmakers is with the Governor. For me I think Obaseki should have averted these problem by just issuing a...
